Why is the PSU mascot a gorilla?

Pittsburg State is the only college or university with a gorilla as its mascot. The nickname was adopted in the 1920’s by a student pep club. Some believe the nickname was due to the region’s mining history, but, at the time, it was actually a slang term for “roughnecks”. Learn more.
