History & Heritage

What once looked like the rest of Kansas was instead shaped by mining, immigrants with their own traditions, and a will to survive by any means necessary.

Ethnic & Cultural

Immigrants from all over the world came to work area mines. Murals and other exhibits across the region tell the stories of hardship, survival and solidarity.

Historic Sites

Reminders of the region’s past are everywhere: historic buildings and a 16 story shovel. The state park and many state recreation areas also have landmarks.

Seven museums in and near Crawford County show how agriculture, mining, railroads, immigration and bootlegging created a region unlike anywhere else in Kansas.
